These combine with top & middle notes to form a bouquet of fragrance. E.g. musk, patchouli, wood, vanilla etc. Aside from that there are other molecules like aldehydes that make base notes. Base notes come into play a few hours after spraying the perfume. The important thing is this, the base note should not become off putting in dry down stage; sometimes powdery notes can mature into that. It will ruin the experience.
